RIGHTS & PERMISSIONS
Author Rights
Authors of IOVS, JOV, and TVST articles retain the right to reuse material from their own articles in their future work, with proper attribution. Permission does not need to be obtained from ARVO.
Permissions
To republish ARVO journal material in a non-ARVO journal
For articles published prior to 2016
If you would like to use material from an article for which you were NOT an author, please obtain permission through the Copyright Clearance Center (CCC). There is a fee of $35 per figure or table plus a small CCC service fee. When reprinting the material, please include a full article citation and acknowledge the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology as the copyright holder. If you have questions or an unusual request, e.g., reuse of material online, please contact Debbie Chin at dchin@arvo.org.
All companies, commercial and nonprofit, should contact ARVO directly for permission to reprint articles or parts thereof. Please email your request to Debbie Chin at dchin@arvo.org.
For articles published 2016 and later
The ARVO journals became fully open access starting with articles published in 2016. Material from articles published in 2016 or later may be reused in the manner specified by the Creative Commons license applied to the article--either the CC BY-NC-ND (Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs) or the CC BY (Creative Commons Attribution) license. The license type is listed at the bottom of the first page of the PDF and also at the bottom of the XML version. Permission does not need to be obtained from ARVO.
While ARVO holds the copyright of articles published before 2016, the authors hold the copyright of their own articles published in 2016 and later. If you would like to reuse material in a manner not permitted by an article's Creative Commons license, please contact the authors for permission.
Please note that if any material (e.g., a figure) was published previously, you will need to contact the copyright holder of that material to obtain permission to reuse it.
To republish ARVO journal material in an ARVO journal
If you would like to reuse original material from a published ARVO journal article in a new paper you are writing for an ARVO journal, you don't need to obtain permission. ARVO will grant permission to reuse ARVO material in an ARVO publication. Please cite the original published article as the source. However, if the figure or table appearing in the ARVO journal article was originally published elsewhere, you will need to obtain permission from that original source.
If you have any questions, please contact Debbie Chin at dchin@arvo.org.
